Abstract Huzhou merchants risen in the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China is a modern businessmen clusters, while Hui merchants done between the Ming and Qing Dynasty is of a typical traditional businessmen cluster. If the two merchants are compared by us, some conclusions may be found: their same thriving reasons are the operating integrity and quality, the implementation of diversified investment, the creation of a good external environment for enterprises, the emphasis on marketing and sale as well as similar geographical conditions, traffic conditions and regional culture background, and then their different thriving reasons are the variations of their social and historical environment, local economic structure, commodities, markets, trades, the relations of the government of absolute monarchy, businessmen organizations. In addition, their common characteristic is sticking to the Confucius theory and proverbs.
