Abstract Based on the perspective of regional tourism market integration, this paper analyzes the scale difference of urban tourism through the number of domestic and inbound tourists among the prefectural-level cities in the Pan-Yangtze River Delta from 2002 to 2014 by employing Coefficient of Variation, Gini Coefficient, Urban Primacy Index and Herfindahl Index etc. Although compared with that of the domestic tourism, the urban tourism in the Pan-Yangtze River Delta has a higher agglomeration degree, the downtrend shows that the competition between domestic and inbound tourism is more fierce. Then the rank-size distribution of spatial econometric model is introduced to explore the producing mechanism of the scale difference; the results show that the spatial autocorrelation of tourism scale does influence the rank-size scale distribution of urban tourism; the rank-size scale distribution of cities in Pan-Yangtze River Delta changes from centralized mode to scattered balanced mode; although the inbound tourism keeps a first-place distribution, it is gradually changing to centralized mode. The paper offers some valuable references for local governments when they identify their position in the regional tourism system and make the strategic plans for regional tourism system.
