Abstract Nowadays, most enterprises are wild about labeling low carbon operation and regard it as the new management fashion, but the nature of low carbon operation of enterprises is not clarified yet by the academics and practitioners. This paper explains the nature of low carbon operation of enterprises based on theories of economics, sociology and marketing, and then exemplifies the appropriateness of low carbon operation of enterprises and develops the boundary of low carbon operation of enterprises. Finally, a reliable theoretical foundation for the practice of low carbon operation of enterprises is provided.
