Abstract:In the digital age, the Internetis widely used in education and teaching, and the mechanism of educational inequality is becoming increasingly complex. There are two digital gaps in the Internet use of Chinese teenagers. One is “access gap”, that is, teenagers from better family backgrounds are more likely to use the Internet. The second is “usage gap”, that is, teenagers from better family backgrounds have healthier and more efficient Internet use habits. Both of the two digital gaps have important impacts on educational inequality. The “access gap” performs as a mediating effect, while the “usage gap” performs as a moderating effect. Because of the high penetration rate of the Internet among Chinese youngsters, the moderating effect is much stronger than the mediating effect. Future public policy efforts should focus on narrowing the social divide in the Internet use and bridging the “access gap”.
