Abstract:The evolution of socio-political and economic structure, the deterioration of the relationship between people, and the loss of human morality have led to the emergence of social-critical realism literature. The infiltration of natural science thinking catalyzes the realistic spirit of realism literature. The deepening and expanding of the understanding of humanity strengthens the authenticity and profundity of the depiction of human soul in realism literature. Social criticism, authenticity and profound description of humanity are the essential features of 19th century realism literature as well as the “classic” elements of these literary texts. 19th century realism writers show the diversity of human mind in the society of God’s absence and money worship, and describe the destructive power of human “evil” aroused by money with the real and deep social observation as well as the analysis of human nature. Through the creations, they warned the people of that day and even today: the greed that is induced by materialism will send human into hell — “they are the hell of their own.” Their creations have widely become “literary classics” that still hold a profound warning significance.
