Research on the Relationship between Poverty and Mental Health of Left-behind Children——An Analytical Study Based on Xiushui County in Jiangxi Province

Abstract:Researches on the impact of poverty on children’s mental health remain academic controversial. Empirical researches aimed at left-behind children groups are still lacking. Based on the research analysis framework of social causation theory, this study analyzes the impact of poverty on the mental health of the left-behind children through the survey data of 625 left-behind children in Xiushui of Jiangxi Province. Results show that: (1) The poverty level of the left-behind children was relatively high, with severe muti-dimensional deprivation; (2) Poverty had a significant effect on both negative mental health and positive mental health of left-behind children, but there were differences in the degrees of influence; (3) There was a remarkable grade difference in the mental health of the left-behind children, and the mental health level of high grade children was relatively poor. This study provides an important basis for improving the mental health of the left-behind children in poverty.
