Abstract:The legendary epic The Song of Hiawatha by Longfellow represents the history and culture of the early Indians, but influenced by the superiority of the European civilization, it fails to historically reveal the colonized, true Indians. And thus it turns to be a colonialist context full of imperial discourses. Through a close reading of the poem and a detailed analysis of the cultural background, this essay probes into Longfellow’s representation of the Indians, attempting to explicate the hidden reason for his representation.
