Managers’ Inadequate Negative Feedback: Concept, Structure and Psychological Mechanisms |

Abstract When managers are giving negative feedback to employees, they tends to neglect, delay or distort the negative feedback in order to avoid interpersonal conflict. This paper names this behavior as managers’ inadequate negative feedback (INF), summarizes INF’s possible dimensions and the psychological mechanisms affecting the behavior. INF’s dimensions include avoidance, politeness, implication and leniency. In addition, managers’ agreeableness, conscientiousness and expertise constitutes the characterized variables of managers in INF. On the individual level of employees, variables including employees’ self-esteem, task significance and trust of employees in managers should be the important moderating factors of INF.
