Abstract Zhejiang family businesses are now experiencing a critical moment of “father to son”, and the tacit knowledge transfer is a carrier of family business succession. With a study of multiple cases, we explored tacit knowledge elements in Zhejiang family businesses’ succession. The research result shows, the important tacit knowledge inheritance elements of Zhejiang family businesses include pioneering and adventurous spirit, external network, experience in staff management and complex affairs, professionalism, internal network, values and technical know-how and experience. Then through analyzing its implicit characteristics and inheritance significance based on the tacit knowledge classification model, we construct a tacit knowledge matrix of Zhejiang family business succession. The Matrix clearly shows the implicit characteristics of these elements from two dimensions. This study may provide useful information and basics for subsequent tacit knowledge inheritance patterns and mechanism research. It is the development of family business succession theory, and has important practical significance for effective succession.
