Abstract Exposure of golden rice event triggered widespread controversy among the micro-bloggers. At the beginning of the event, the public expressed emotional catharsis, showing extreme mistrust of the government and non-acceptance of the genetically modified foods. After the incident investigation report was publicized, micro-blog subject’s attitude towards genetically modified (gm) food and their psychological cognition of it changed, from the beginning emotional catharsis to objective attention and rational inquiry, in parallel with emotional catharsis. The shift in attitude led micro-bloggers into better understanding of genetically modified food. However, such understanding does not improve their acceptance of gm food synchronously. Finally based on the shift in the micro-bloggers’ cognition and attitude towards gm food, this article puts forward relevant policy recommendations.
