Abstract A conceptual model for the impact of partner characteristics and relationship quality on knowledge trading is proposed by introducing relationship quality as an intermediary variable and empirically tested using the data from 256 enterprises in supply chain through the structural equation model. The partner characteristics in the model are described from cultural compatibility, resource dependence and knowledge distance. The results show that there are significant and positive impact of cultural compatibility and resource dependence on relationship quality and knowledge trading. Although knowledge distance has significant and negative impact on relationship quality, it does not have significant negative impact on knowledge trading. We also find that relationship quality has significant and positive impact on knowledge trading. In addition, the indirect impact of knowledge distance on knowledge trading and the greatest impact of cultural compatibility on knowledge trading are proved by the mediating effect of relationship quality.
