Abstract Export growth of China’s hightech products to the U.S. is volatile, especially when China export growth faces the external shock such as financial crisis. Using the HS8 trade data from 2003 to 2006, this paper analyzes the structure of China’s hightech exports to the U.S.. The results indicate that China export growth of hightech products to the U.S. mainly depends on the intensive trade margin, and the extensive trade margin is very little. When the threshold value rises, the extensive trade margin changes very little. So the unbalance of exports structure and the limited expansion of the extensive trade margin are the main reasons for China’s export volatility in hightech products. Therefore, China should turn to the extensive trade margin from the intensive trade margin and adjust the export structure to enhance the technical level of hightech products.
