Abstract Based on the theory of self-control resources, this paper takes 354 employees as samples to explore whether performance pressure can lead to workplace deception through employees' self-depletion, and it also discusses the moderating role of paternalistic leadership and error management atmosphere. The results show that: performance pressure has a significant positive impact on workplace deception; performance pressure induces employees to commit workplace deception through inducing self-depletion; benevolent leadership has a positive moderating effect, while moral leadership and error management climate have a negative moderating effect. The results are helpful to reveal the internal mechanism and boundary conditions of workplace deception, and the possible influence of paternalistic leadership and error management climate.
