In her first novel MaMa, the contemporary African American woman writer Terry McMillan discussed the problem of black motherhood. For a long time, African American mothers have been given a name-“superstrong Black mother” which seems to speak highly of black mothers, but in fact prevents them from pursuing their independent identity and motherhood. This paper mainly examines the reverse writing of “superstrong Black mother” image and the reconstruction of black motherhood in the novel from such three aspects as the discharge of the black mother’s sexual desire, emotional need and the reconstruction of a new family modal, black mother’s unique way to express her motherhood to defuse the crisis of black motherhood, and arrogation of living space and the dismantlement of class barrier, which may provide some reference for people’s cognition, construction and practice of motherhood.
