Abstract:If we will grant a hearing for Oakeshott’s philosophy , or for its possiblity, then how do we come to grip with it? Oakeshott is known today as the philosopher of “conservatism .” But he has not yet shared much in the recent revival of American conservatism , or rather his philosophy is very with traditionalism. Whatever one may think of his philosophy , it is striking that Oakeshott was made the purveyor of the philosophy of history to healthy politics. If there is one recurrent theme in Oakeshott’s writings, it is his emphasis on the moral and political evils that follow upon the intrusion of theory into (political) practic. But his emphasis on the evlis of intrusive theory is not balanced by a compensating reliance on traditional implications that men would need as a guide to their practice.
