Abstract:The coming of an economic age brings a lot of great changes to the Chinese cultural and educational ecology. Under the influences of the secularization and utilitarian tendency of school administration, the culturally comprehensive education at universities has been weakened and marginalized day by day, which depletes college students' ideals, responsibilities and spirits, which in turn cause colleges' functions to seriously weaken, and directly influences colleges' training quality of talents and the whole national cultural quality. In order to change this situation, the state has put the Culturally Comprehensive Education Project into effect. But the ideas, steps and results are all unsatisfactory. The major reason is that the whole country's cultural ecology should be improved urgently. The development of human beings lies in the spirit. The focus of higher education should be on the inheritance of culture and the improvement of students' spirits, which are the cultural responsibilities of higher education. These responsibilities have made some colleges develop effective efforts with good results, but there is still a long road to go. The ideology and practical effects should be improved further. These theoretical discussions and experimental exchanges have been the important harvest in the 4th Culturally Comprehensive Education Symposium of Colleges and Universities in eastern China.
