Abstract The linguistic turn emerging from late 1980s has made vocabulary analysis an important method and theoretical framework in organizational studies. This paper reviews extant literature on organizational vocabulary from the functional perspective, and points out that the basic functions of vocabulary, including rhetoric, coordination, culture and cognition, enable organizational vocabulary studies to be closely connected with organizational institution, communication, change and other related areas. Based on the extensive review, this paper analyzes the contributions of extant organizational vocabulary studies, proposes the interactive research model of vocabulary functions, and presents directions for future research by identifying limitations of previous work. With such efforts, we expect to introduce the research method and framework of vocabulary analysis to the Chinese organizational research field, and pave roads for further organizational vocabulary studies, especially such studies in the special context of China.
