Abstract Global competition and internet retailing lead manufactures and retailers into the dilemma of development. This paper analyzes the dilemma of development, breaks through the research framework of vertical competition and explores collaborative strategies between retailers and manufactures. The study further suggests retailers and manufactures creating value in collaborative ways, breeding the flagship firms of global value chain and dominators of global innovation chain, so that “made in China” will surpass subcontracting, achieve endogenous industrial upgrading and convert strategically the economic structure.
