Abstract At present, China is in a transition period with growing social differentiation. In particular, in the rural tourism development process, economic benefits and environmental benefits and values appear differentiated in some rural communities. Increasing social differentiation not only threatens social harmony, and has negative effects on the development of rural tourism as well. This study investigates the social differentiation in Hongyancun by using questionnaires and interviews, and analyzes the relationship among different social groups by using stakeholder theory. Finally, some suggestions are provided about the social integration in the development of rural tourism.
