Abstract Harvard Business Review is always playing the important role in guiding theoretical frontiers. Based on the papers about retailing in Harvard Business Review (1922-2006) in the database of EBSCO, we analyzed the research field, the publishing time as well as the citing situation. Our study indicates that in Harvard Business Review, the main aspects of retail academic papers concentrate on retail strategy, retail format, retail composed element, retail information technology, etc., the quantity of documents in each retail field is significantly imbalanced; there are different emphases in different historical periods; more than half of the papers on retailing are cited, which reflects their great academic influence. Retail information technology, retail internationalization, private brand, retail channel and retail customer will become the focus of retail theory and practical exploration in the future.
