Corporate Social Responsibility and Performance of Family Business: The Moderating Effect of Internal Capability and External Relationship |

Abstract Using the data of 351 family businesses in Zhejing and Chongqing, this paper first identifies CSR for family business in China as insiders’ responsibility, outsiders’ responsibility and public responsibility, and then empirically tests the relationship between CSR and performance, and the moderating effect of internal capability and external guanxi of family business in China. The result indicates that the relationship between insiders’ responsibility and performance is more significant for family businesses with high-internal capability (i.e., manufacturing and absorptive capability), the relationship between public responsibility and performance is less significant for family businesses with high-absorptive capability, the relationship between outsiders’ responsibility and performance is more significant for family businesses with abundant external guanxi (i.e., high-density and large-size guanxi networks).
