Abstract On the basis of investigation data form ShanXi province, this paper analyzes the effect of the education to the income gap between rural and urban areas. The conclusion shows, either in the rural or in the urban area, the higher the level of the education the more income of the people. But the marginal returns of the educational investment have different features between the two areas. In the rural area, there is an increasing marginal return, but in the urban, the marginal return is diminishing. In the end, we present an interpretation of this phenomenon, and some relative policy suggestions were proposed.
