Abstract The nature of supply chain relationship is co-existence of cooperation and competition, and the aim of the relationship is value creation. Various kinds of rent result in the value creation in supply chain. This paper analyzes the approaches to value creation of supply chain by applying the rent theory. It points out that supply chain creates value through obtaining Chamberlinian Rent by setting up barriers to entry, Schumpeterian Rent by creating and transferring knowledge, Richardian Rent by cultivating core resources and Quasi Rent by acquiring complementary effect and cluster effect of resources, and the value creation is achieved by coopetition.
